Thomas Edward Hurdman was born on the 28th of October at 04:10
Tom's a little cutie and pictures will follow!
He put his mum though a good deal of suffering and he ended up being delivered by emergency c-section. He seemed to be too comfortable in there and kept the door shut, and his mum in agony. She endured just under 2 days of Labour, the last 12 hours are something I never want to witness again. I hardly coped watching it, I'm amazed how my wife got through it.
I never knew his mum was so strong and she's now my No 1 hero. Forget Spiderman, forget Batman, even forget Terry Wogan, it's Lisa who's the superhero.
There are other heros. The entire staff at Sandwell Maternity unit. Every one of them. Their professionalism kept Lisa and Tom safe under very difficult circumstances and good humour kept us all reassured (and sane) as we sailed those uncharted waters.
Sadly, the department is understaffed and underfunded. As they did such a great job for us, I can't imagine the number of people they could help with the right funding. Maybe they could actually open the unused maternity ward (a whole floor!) and ensure all children in Sandwell would be given the good treatment Tom recieved? I hope you're listening Mr Blair.
And how's this for spooky. When things weren't going smoothly the delivery suit seemed to fill with every doctor from Sandwell General. I looked at the name tag of one Doctor and it turned out he was called Dr Thomas Herdman.
Hmmm.
So I pointed it out to Lisa and told the Dr that if a boy popped out, that they'd be sharing a name as that is what we'd chosen.
Anyway, 4 or 5 hours later Lisa is on the operating table and out pops Thomas. We were told we'd got a boy and asked if we'd got a name.
"Thomas Edward" I replied.
"No way" shouted Dr Herdman, "that's my name! You've got to call him Charles too, my full name is Thomas Edward Charles Herdman".
Sort of spooky.
But he spelt his name in a silly way, too many e's and not enough u's. And nipper isn't being given the additional name of Charles. For all I know that Dr could be a Villa fan. >;o)
